چکیده

This work was carried out in the framework of a larger project devoted to the micro-mechanical modeling of clayey soils by means of discrete element simulations. Here, we study the rheology and microstructure of granular media composed of platy particles. The particles are three-dimensional square plates, approximated as spheropolyhedra. Several samples composed of particles of different levels of platyness (related to the ratio of length to thickness) were numerically prepared and sheared up to large deformations. Specifically, we revisit and analyze in detail an ordering phenomenon described briefly in a previous paper [1] and investigate its consequences in terms of the alignment of particles and cluster formation. We find that particle alignment is strongly enhanced by the degree of platyness and leads to the formation of face-connected clusters. Due to dynamics, this spontaneous clustering is a robust characteristic of granular systems composed of platy particles even in the absence of attraction forces.

A Study of the Wave Propagation Velocity in Granular Soils Using Discrete Element Method (DEM)

In the present paper, discrete element method (DEM) is used to study wave propagation phenomenon in granular soils. The effect of factors such as coefficient of friction, frequency, normal stiffness and soil gradation on the wave velocity is studied. Using the wall motion based on the sinusoidal function is the method of loading used in this simulation, through which the pressure wave is transf...

Shear strength and microstructure of 3D assemblies of platy particles

As a first step towards particle-scale modeling of clayey soils, we investigate the mechanical behavior and microstructure of assemblies of three-dimensional rectangular platy particles by means of the discrete element method. Several samples composed of particles of different levels of platyness (ratio of width to thickness) were numerically prepared and sheared to large deformations. We analy...

مدل‌سازی رفتار خاک‌های دانه‌ای غیر‌اشباع به‌روش اجزا منفصل

Although a significant portion of conditions encountered in geotechnical engineering, for investigating engineering behavior of soil, involves unsaturated soils; the traditional analysis and design approach has been to assume the limiting conditions of soils being either completely dry or completely saturated. In unsaturated soils the capillary force produce attractive forces between particles....

Effects of Glass-Fiber Reinforced Polymer and Waste Polypropylene Plastic Particles on Geotechnical Properties of Clayey Soils for Using Subgrade in the Pavement

The fine-grained soil including the problematic ones can cause many difficulties in project accomplishment. Settlement and swelling are among the problems of the fine-grained soils. The present study compared the effects of the polypropylene waste plastic (PWP) and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) on geotechnical properties of the clayey soils for the subgrade design. To this end, the PWP ...

Influence of particle shape on shear band formation of quasistatic granular media

We study the influence of particle shape on the shear band formation in quasistatic granular media in biaxial compression test using two-dimensional Distinct Element Method (DEM). Elliptical-shaped particles are used to study the influence of particle shape. We also report an experimental verification to check the ability of DEM to model elliptical particles created by the clustering technique....
